Balazs Wanyi was born in Budapest in 1943. While studying at the Technical University of Budapest, he became increasingly interested in artistic endeavors. He began rapidly developing his artistic talent, and his intentions of becoming an architect gave way to his unyielding passion to be a professional artist, yet all of his works still possess a specific architectural precision that is rooted in his original background.
Intrigued by the glazing techniques used by the old masters, Wanyi started to emulate and perfect these artistic skills soon after finishing his professional studies; his compositions slowly take form through many transparent layers of oil paint on wooden panel. Each layer must dry before another is applied, taking the utmost patience and skill.
The observer is treated to a delectable array of still-lifes that are painted with crisp and defined brush strokes, which recreate the enticing tenderness of perfectly ripe fruit, with beads of condensation sluggishly dripping down their surface. Wanyi chooses to depict fruit with slight imperfections as to encourage the viewer to look further at the painting, and enjoy the splendor that is created amidst flaws. The fruit has thus become a metaphor for people, inviting us to look beyond the flaws and celebrate the tender beauty that is intertwined with the uniqueness of each human being.
Wanyi also traveled to England where he stayed for an extended period of time, growing quite accustomed to the London gallery scene where he flourished as a respected artist. His popularity was immediate, and he won local and worldwide acclaim with his "hyper realistic" depictions.
In the late eighties, Wanyi was finally allowed to return to his home country of Hungary when it was set free from political turmoil. Once he was settled in Budapest, he established himself as a successful artist whose work became collected in many countries throughout Europe, and increasingly in the U.S.
Cosmopolitan Fine Arts is proud to represent the artwork of Balazs Wanyi.
