(1899-1985)
Marcel Dyf was born in Paris in 1899. At the age of twenty-three he decided to devote his life entirely to painting, although he had already painted precociously since the age of thirteen.
Dyf is recognized as an atmospheric painter, following in the footsteps of the plein air artists Monet, Pissaro, and Renoir. His intuitive skill has been generously compared to the Impressionist Masters of the 19th Century, which is not surprising as his most productive years overlapped their lives and creative genius. Dyf experienced the ongoing evolution of French Impressionism at the turn of the century, reveling in its intoxicating colors, revolutionary insights, and rebellious attitude toward traditional schools of thought.
Dyf's talent of depicting objects with but a few strokes, sensitively composed and effectively placed, made his art noticeable to the critics. In his paintings there is no retouching, no re-working; rather, his brushwork is fluid and first-time perfect. Concentrating on landscapes, still-lifes, figuratives, and florals, he introduced a world of beauty to the canvas. Diligently he sought for mood and the direct translation of light and sensation to the canvas.
Let it not be thought that Dyf simply copies the styles of the great artists who were alive when he was born ,Renoir, Van Gogh and Cezanne. Rather, he has applied the lessons learned from them and molded the resulting experience into his own form of art. His 70 years of painting have left a legacy of masterpieces. His art is more than paint on canvas; it is reminiscent of beautiful music or inspiring poetry.
